I call this tech "Jab Wait"
I first saw Daigo doing this in his matches using Ryu's s.LP a while back. Then, I saw Saionide and Hsien Chang do the same thing against me with their respective characters (Saionide uses Ken's cr.LP and Hsien uses Necalli's s.LK). Then, I made my own version using Laura's s.LP.
What is this exactly?
- Simply put, you do a low blockstun light normal that has good pushback on block (good enough that you push yourself out of your opponent's throw range if they block and throw immediately afterwards). After your opponent blocks your light normal, you can throw your opponent if you walk forward 1F before throwing.
- If you want to bait your opponent instead of tick throwing, you hold downback after doing your light normal so you can block reversals/mashed normals from your opponent. If they throw tech immediately after blocking your light normal, their throw will whiff right in front of your character, giving you an easy whiff punish.
- This is very similar to the "shimmy" technique that everyone has been using. The advantages that jab wait has over shimmy is that it's less obvious to see (your character model isn't walking backwards, signaling a shimmy). Also, shimmy is weak to wakeup low attacks (like cr.MK and cr.HK) because it requires you to walk backwards. Jab wait allows you to bait reversals and wakeup low attacks at the same time.
- Jab wait doesn't require a specific setup. It just requires that you do your light normal right in front of your opponent (pretty much point blank).
- I'm pretty sure most of the cast in SFV can do this technique. You just have to find a light normal with enough pushback on block that puts your character out of your opponent's throw range.
- This technique is mainly used against players with bad throw tech habits (teching immediately after blocking a light normal because they expect a tick throw). To counter jab wait, your opponent just has to walk forward 1F before attempting their throw. To counter that counter, you would just do a normal string that would hit your opponent out of their walk forward.
- This technique generally doesn't work against characters with the furthest throw ranges (Birdie/M. Bison). Laura's s.LP is an exception ^_^
